Terms of use
Plain terms for a plain site: read it, use the calculators, rely on your own professional advice before you act. Nothing here is a substitute for a lawyer, an accountant or a consular officer.
What this site is
Portugal Sorted publishes general information and free calculators about moving to Portugal. It is an educational publication. It is not a law firm, an immigration agency, a tax adviser, an insurance broker or a regulated financial adviser, and using it does not create a professional relationship of any kind.
What that means for you
Nothing on this site is legal, tax, immigration, investment or financial advice for your situation. The guides describe rules that apply generally; the calculators apply those rules to figures you type in. Neither can see your nationality, your treaty position, your family structure, your income sources or your consular post's local practice — and all of those change the answer.
Before you act on anything here, take it to someone qualified who is responsible for your case: a Portuguese lawyer, a registered accountant (contabilista certificado), or the consulate that will decide your application. That step is not optional.
Accuracy, dates and estimates
We work hard to get the figures right and to date every page. Even so:
- Portuguese tax, social security and immigration rules change with each annual budget, and municipal rates are decided locally each year. A page that was accurate when it was reviewed can be out of date today.
- The calculators are planning estimates. They state their inputs, their assumptions and their omissions on the same page, and where they simplify a rule they say so rather than hiding it.
- Visa benchmark figures are arithmetic comparisons, not predictions. No calculator can tell you whether a consular officer will approve your application.
- City cost figures are editorial scenarios, not official statistics. They are labelled as estimates wherever they appear.
We do not warrant that the site will be available, uninterrupted, or free of errors, and we may change or remove content at any time.
Financial decisions are yours
Do not make a purchase, a property transaction, a visa application, an investment, a pension transfer or a relocation decision on the strength of anything on this site alone. Get figures confirmed in writing by the authority that will assess you — the Autoridade Tributária, Segurança Social, AIMA, or the consulate handling your file — or by a professional acting for you. If a number here and a number from an official source disagree, the official source is right and we would like to hear about it.
Links to other websites
Most pages on this site link out to official sources: tax code articles, decree-laws, government guidance, statistical bodies. Those links are provided so you can check our work. We do not control those sites and are not responsible for their content, availability or privacy practices.
Using our content
The written guides, the calculators and the design of this site belong to the site operator. You are welcome to read, print, quote and share them with attribution and a link. You may not republish whole pages or articles as your own, resell the content, or scrape the site at scale — including for training a commercial model — without written permission. Photographs are credited on the editorial policy page and are licensed as stated there; the credits are not decorative and must travel with the images.
Advertising and independence
There is no advertising on this site today. If display advertising is introduced, it will be labelled, it will not influence which tools exist or what the guides conclude, and the privacy policy will be updated before any ad script runs. Nothing on this site is a paid recommendation: no company pays for inclusion in a guide, a comparison or a source list.
Limits of liability
To the extent permitted by law, the site operator is not liable for loss or damage arising from reliance on the site's content, from the unavailability of the site, or from decisions taken on the basis of an estimate it produced. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited, and nothing here affects the statutory rights of a consumer.
If you are a consumer in the EU or the UK
You have statutory rights that these terms cannot remove. If you believe the site has caused you a problem, write to [FILL: real contact email] first and give us a chance to answer, and use your national consumer body if that does not resolve it.
Which law applies
These terms are governed by the law of [FILL: operator’s legal contact address and country]. If you are a consumer resident elsewhere, the mandatory consumer protections of your own country still apply to you.
Changes
These terms may be updated; the review date at the top of the page will change when they are. Continuing to use the site after a change means the current version applies.
If a term here is unclear, ask before you rely on your own reading of it. The question costs nothing and the answer is usually short.
