Visas, residency and the paperwork

What decides whether and how you can move: the route, the income benchmark, and who has to do what after you arrive.

Can I still apply for NHR when I move to Portugal?

The original Non-Habitual Resident regime closed to most new arrivals from 2024, with limited transitional provisions. Existing approved residents may continue for their remaining eligible period. IFICI is a separate, narrower incentive for qualifying work; it is not automatic NHR for every new resident. Start with our NHR and IFICI guides before estimating any tax advantage.

What is the difference between the D7 and D8 visas?

D7 is generally used by people with stable income such as pensions or qualifying rental and investment income. D8 is designed for qualifying remote work for employers or clients outside Portugal. They use different evidence and income benchmarks. A savings balance does not automatically replace recurring income for either route.

Check the income benchmarks
Are the visa income thresholds based on IAS?

No. The means-of-subsistence reference for these routes is the Portuguese minimum monthly wage (RMMG), not the Social Support Index (IAS). Our 2026 checker uses €920 for the principal D7 planning benchmark and four times that amount, €3,680, for the D8 principal applicant. Family allowances and evidence need to be checked against your consulate’s instructions.

Do EU citizens need a D7 or D8 visa?

EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens normally use free-movement residence procedures rather than D7 or D8 visas. Stays beyond three months generally require the appropriate local registration. Non-EU family members can have a separate process. Citizenship and family circumstances matter, so consult the applicable official residence guidance.

Plan your arrival
Why do old guides still mention SEF?

SEF was replaced in the 2023 institutional reorganisation. AIMA now handles many residence-related administrative responsibilities, while consulates still handle visa applications abroad and other authorities have their own responsibilities. An old SEF link or appointment instruction may no longer describe the current process.

Tax, banks and what things cost

Money questions, separated from visa questions, because they usually have different answers depending on where your income comes from.

Is Portugal cheaper than the UK or the US?

It depends on your starting city, household, housing needs, and income. Rent in central Lisbon can erase a large part of the difference in other day-to-day costs. Smaller cities may reduce housing costs but add transport or travel costs. Compare your actual household budget rather than relying on a national average.

Do I need a Portuguese bank account before applying for a visa?

Many consulates ask for evidence connected to a Portuguese account, but the precise checklist varies by visa type and where you apply. Confirm the current requirements with the consular post responsible for your legal residence before paying for account-opening services.

The parts that only matter once you are here, and that are much harder to fix in a hurry.

Can I use Portuguese public healthcare?

Access depends on your residence status and applicable entitlement, not simply owning a NIF or an SNS user number. Eligible residents should register with their local health centre and confirm their funding status. Private insurance can supplement access but brings its own exclusions, waiting periods, and age restrictions.

What these calculators are, what they are not, and how to get a figure corrected.

How accurate are the calculators?

They are transparent planning estimates with stated inputs and limitations. The salary tool models mainland progressive IRS before some personal reliefs, not an employer’s exact monthly withholding. City budgets are editable editorial scenarios. Visa results compare financial benchmarks and cannot predict an approval.

Are you an immigration law firm or a tax adviser?

Portugal Sorted is an independent educational planning website. It does not represent applicants, prepare tax returns, or provide personalised legal or regulated financial advice. One person researches and writes it, and the About page names them.

Are my financial inputs saved?

Calculator inputs are processed in your browser and are not sent to our server. We do not require an account. The contact form sends only the details you choose to submit, and the site’s privacy policy explains how those messages are handled.

How can I report an error or a changed rule?

Use the contact form and include the page address, the passage or calculation you are querying, and a link to the relevant official update where possible. Please avoid sending passports, tax returns, or other sensitive personal documents.
