EVERYDAY LIFE

Portugal cost of living calculator

Cost-of-living comparisons usually fail for one reason: they quote a rent that nobody you know is paying. This tool starts from an editable scenario for each city and lets you replace the parts you already know — your rent, your transport, your health cover — so the number reflects your life rather than an average.

Cost of living appears here.

Adjust the fields on the left. The estimate updates as you change a value, and the method behind it is explained in full underneath.

Where the numbers come from

Each city carries a scenario built in September 2026 from listed rents, utility tariffs, transport passes and supermarket prices, then sanity-checked against the budget of a household living there. They are editorial estimates, not official statistics. Statistics Portugal publishes rent and price indices, and they are the better source for a national trend — but a national index cannot tell you what a two-bedroom in a specific parish costs this month.

Why rent carries the answer

In every city here, a central two-bedroom costs more than everything else in the budget combined. That is why the tool lets you overwrite the rent with a figure you have actually seen: a listing you responded to, a contract a friend signed, a quote from an agent. The other categories move the total by tens of euros. Rent moves it by hundreds.

How the categories scale

Housing is the scenario's rent for the size you chose. Utilities and internet rise with the number of people but not proportionally, since a second person does not double the electricity bill. Groceries, eating out and everyday extras scale per person with children counted at 60% of an adult, which is a rough but realistic weighting. Transport scales with people at 40% for children, because a child adds journeys without adding a commuter pass. Health cover scales at 70% per child.

The lifestyle factor

The three spending styles multiply the flexible categories — groceries, dining and leisure, everyday extras — by 0.8, 1.0 and 1.35. Rent, utilities and health cover are left alone, because you do not choose a cheaper electricity tariff by being frugal in the same way you choose a cheaper restaurant. The point is to give you a dial you recognise, not to model behaviour precisely.

What is not in this budget

School fees, which in international schools are a budget line of their own and can exceed everything here. Buying or financing a car, and its insurance. Flights home. Portuguese income tax and Social Security, which belong in the salary calculator. One-off costs of arriving: deposits, furniture, the residency paperwork, the first month in temporary accommodation. And the buffer: the tool adds a contingency percentage on top, and you should keep it there, because the month something breaks is exactly the month you will not want to have spent it.

Reading the comparison strip

The row of city totals uses your household and lifestyle, not the defaults, so it is a like-for-like comparison of the same life in five places. The gap between Lisbon and Braga is real, but it is a housing gap: if you keep a Lisbon rent in a Braga budget, you will not see the saving.

Questions this tool raises

Are these figures official?

No. They are editorial scenarios built in September 2026 from listed prices and tariffs, and they are meant to be edited. For official statistics, Statistics Portugal (INE) publishes rent and consumer price indices.

Why is the Algarve transport figure so high?

Because the Algarve is where a car stops being optional. Towns are spread along the coast, buses are thin outside the summer, and a household car — fuel, insurance, maintenance — shows up in that line.

Should I include tax in my budget?

Keep it separate. Run your salary through the take-home calculator first, then budget from the net figure. Mixing gross income with living costs is how people convince themselves a move is affordable when it is not.
